Dental Crowns

What are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns can help to cover teeth that are compromised or severely damaged. They are made of realistic-looking materials that are durable and long-lasting. Most crowns can last for years or even decades without needing special care. They can be placed on virtually any tooth within the mouth.

Why are Dental Crowns needed?

A dental crown is typically needed when a tooth has been damaged or is compromised in some way. They are helpful both for cosmetic and restorative reasons. Some of the different reasons you’d benefit from a crown include:

  • A tooth is broken, cracked or fractured
  • A tooth has a large area of decay or a large filling in it
  • You’ve recently had a root canal
  • A tooth suffers from severe sensitivity issues

Who Is A Candidate For Dental Crowns

Who is a candidate for Dental Crowns?

Dr. Ferdkoff will examine your teeth to determine if a crown is needed. Most often, if you’ve had a root canal performed on any one of your teeth, a crown should be placed shortly after to protect the tooth from breakage and cracking. The majority of crowns can last for about 10 or more years before needing any replacement or repair. You can feel confident in the way your crown looks, since it is made specifically for you using high-quality dental materials.

What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?

The procedure will begin with a local anesthetic that is used to numb the area. Once numb, Dr. Ferdkoff will file down the tooth to create what is known as an abutment, or seat, for the new crown. Impressions are taken to be used to make the permanent crown. Your second appointment will involve placing the crown over the abutment and securing it firmly in place. The doctor will make any slight adjustments to the crown as needed and you’ll be ready to leave the office with your new restoration. The majority of crowns don’t require special treatment, and you can brush and floss around them as usual.
