Dental Exams & Cleanings

What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Exams and cleanings are both important aspects to your dental health. Exams are performed to find issues, so that they can be handled early on, before they turn into complicated and expensive problems. Cleanings are performed by licensed and registered dental hygienists, who work diligently to clean your teeth of harmful tartar and plaque. By being proactive about your oral health, problems can be prevented, keeping your smile bright and healthy for life.

Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?

Regardless of how long it’s been since your last exam and cleaning, it’s never too late to start taking care of your teeth. Regular dental exams are necessary because they helps us to identify issues you might be developing early on, so that treatment is easier and more effective. Cleanings are helpful when it comes to keeping your teeth looking their best, while simultaneously preventing problems from developing, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Together with good home oral hygiene, a cleaning and exam will help to keep your smile healthy and strong.

Who Is A Candidate For Dental Exams & Cleanings

Who is a candidate for Dental Exams & Cleanings?

Every member of your family is a candidate for both exams and cleanings. It’s never too early to get your children in for their first appointment. In fact, we recommend bringing infants in who are just starting to have their teeth poke through their gums. It’s never too late to start taking care of your oral health either, so we urge you to visit our office to start having regular exams, even if it’s been years since your last appointment.

What happens during Dental Exams & Cleanings?

First, our licensed hygienist will take x-rays of your teeth to help during the examination process. The hygienist next cleans the teeth using special tools, called scalers. An ultrasonic scaler may be used for heavy buildup on the teeth, as it can remove what is hard to get with normal instruments. The hygienist finishes the treatment by flossing and polishing the teeth to a brilliant shine. Following the cleaning, Dr. Ferdkoff will come in and perform an exam. He’s looking for signs of tooth decay and oral cancer, as well as loose or broken teeth and restorations. For the appointment, you will spend less than an hour in our office, allowing you to get back to your busy schedule.
