What are Sealants?
A sealant is a protective coating that is placed over the back teeth. Most often, the back teeth have deep grooves and fissures, making it difficult, or even impossible, to keep them properly clean. Sealants act like a barrier between your tooth and the bacteria and plaque in your mouth. They can help to prevent deep decay, as well as stains, from developing.
Why are Sealants needed?
Sealants are easy to apply, taking just minutes to place. There is absolutely no age limit on having sealants placed, though our pediatric patients will benefit the most from having this procedure done. Some reasons for considering sealants include:
- You or a child has deep grooves, pits, and fissures on the back teeth
- You or a child already has quite a few fillings or cavities
- You’re looking for an effective way to protect your own or your child’s teeth
- You or your child doesn’t have the best brushing and eating habits
- You’re more prone to developing tooth decay
Who is a candidate for Sealants?
Dr. Ferdkoff will examine your or your child’s teeth to determine if sealants are a good treatment option. Most sealants can last for anywhere from one to three years. Depending on the amount of wear they receive, their lifespan will vary. They can be reapplied as often as needed to keep your teeth protected.
What happens during the Sealant process?
The procedure begins by cleaning and drying the back teeth. The sealant starts as a liquid, which is brushed only on the biting surfaces of the back teeth. Once the sealant is applied, it’s cured with a bright light, which melts and hardens the sealant in place. The process is repeated on any other vulnerable back teeth. Having sealants is not an excuse to forgo regular brushing and flossing since they’re only applied to the back teeth. We can check to ensure the sealants are still in place at future checkup visits.
